Ideal title and description length
Google cuts desktop titles at roughly 580-600 pixels and descriptions at around 920 pixels (about two lines). In characters, that is usually 50-60 for titles and 140-160 for descriptions - but wide letters like W and M use up the space faster than i and l, which is why this tool measures pixels.
| Element | Pixel limit | Rough characters |
|---|---|---|
| Title (desktop) | ~580 px | 50 - 60 |
| Meta description (desktop) | ~920 px | 140 - 160 |
Writing snippets that get clicked
- Put the main keyword near the start of the title.
- Say what the page gives the reader: "Free", "Calculator", "2026", "Step-by-step".
- Use the description to answer "why this result?" - it does not affect rankings directly, but it strongly affects click-through rate.
- Google rewrites descriptions it considers unhelpful. A specific, page-matched description is more likely to be kept.
Frequently asked questions
Does meta description length affect rankings?
Not directly. It affects how much of your snippet shows, which affects click-through rate.
Why does Google show a different title than mine?
Google rewrites titles it thinks are too long, stuffed with keywords or mismatched with the page content. Keeping titles under the pixel limit and accurate reduces rewrites.
